West of the Trail
US 41, also known as Tamiami Trail, is the main artery that runs north and south through Sarasota. In the area just south of downtown, and north of Siesta Drive, is the highly desirable neighborhood that is affectionately called “West of the Trail.” This neighborhood surrounds the back of Sarasota Memorial Hospital and is a short hop to the offices downtown, attracting local doctors and business people who want a short drive to work. Additionally, “West of the Trail” is home to Southside Elementary School, currently the highest rated elementary school in the area.
Homeowners in this area love it for the lack of established developments. Each home is unique from the next, many of them custom built, from cute cottages dating back in the 1920’s to pristine modern architecture and large luxury homes. Sidewalks abound, creating a very walkable neighborhood where families get to know each other and kids walk to the bus stop. Lots of shade trees and beautiful gardens and small parks dot the area, which make it a popular place for joggers and bicyclists wanting a little shade from the sun. Several neighborhoods border Sarasota’s bay front, with canals that take boaters a short cruise out to open waters.
Within the West of the Trail neighborhood is the Hillview District, a four block area of restaurants, shops, salons, doctor’s offices, and the award winning Morton’s Market, a food emporium with delicacies from around the world. The Hillview District is home to several live music venues and cocktail lounges, and considered a great night time destination.
Prices West of the Trail are higher than other neighborhoods in Sarasota, but easily one of most stable in property values and lifestyle. This area is also a quick car ride to either Siesta Key or Lido Key, making it one of the best locations for families who are active and want to get out and enjoy the Sarasota lifestyle.
